The NSSO Malvern College Scholarship

Malvern College very generously sponsors the Leader’s chair in each orchestra, offering up to 50% fee remission to award holders. Violinists are asked to indicate on their application form if they wish to apply for the scholarship.

Auditions will be held during the Summer Term (2018) in London and will be conducted by the Artistic Director, NSSO Head of Strings and the orchestras’ conductors. Candidates should bring their own accompanist.

Audition Requirements

  • Two short contrasting pieces lasting 7-8 minutes maximum in total.
  • Preparing a small number of orchestral extracts chosen from the works to be played at the course, copies of which will be sent to candidates in advance of the audition.
  • An accompanied Quick Study Piece lasting about one minute which will be given to the candidate 20 minutes before the audition to prepare and play through with an accompanist.
  • A viva voce about musical/orchestral experiences in general and about the Quick Study Piece in particular.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions about the course and a tour of the campus can be arranged. The standard audition fee (£30) is payable, but there is no extra charge for the scholarship audition itself.

NSSO and Malvern College reserve the right to vary the audition requirements, venue and the panel conducting the auditions if circumstances require. The scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the Artistic Director and the right is reserved not to make an award in the absence of a suitable candidate, or to divide the award in the event of co-leaders being appointed.
