NSSO Academy

NSSO Acdemy is a training orchestra for children typically aged 9-13 years old and playing at grades 3-5 standard.

• For players of grade 3 and above, admission is by audition
• Work as an Orchestra, Concert band and String Ensemble during the week
• Daily individual instrumental coaching as well as sectional and full rehearsals
• Musical activities (other than concert rehearsals) each day
• Extensive range of social and sporting activities, includes swimming and a Malvern Hills walk
• Full board and accommodation, all music and transport between venues is provided
• Resident and non-resident places available

 

Audition:
  • Informal audition lasting 20 minutes (approx.)
  • TWO contrasted pieces to be chosen and played by instrumentalist (maximum total duration of 8 minutes)
  • Sight reading test
  • Viva voce about musical experience and aspiration

Please note, NSSO can provide an accompanist or you can use your own; unaccompanied solo pieces are acceptable, but where there is an accompaniment it must be used.

 

About the Orchestra

Like NSSO and Sinfonia, at the start of the course members work with specialist instrumental coaches, to help meet the technical challenges of the repertoire, before joining together in sectional rehearsals led by our NSSO Academy Heads of Section. This ensures players are prepped for full orchestral rehearsals beforehand.

Sessions tend to be shorter than those of NSSO or Sinfonia and the breaks more numerous. There is also a series of workshops aimed at strengthening the musical skills which underpin the ensemble playing.

Music is at the heart of the NSSO Academy experience, but there is also a brilliant inclusive activities programme organised by our experienced pastoral team. With swimming and field sports, quizzes, a chance to explore the Malvern Hills (under close supervision), indoor table games and also some art/craft sessions too.

The end of the week usually finds the children exhausted, but exhilarated by their musical achievements and delighting by new friendships. In this way, we aim to foster a love of orchestral playing and a real desire to achieve ever higher standards.
