NSSO Conductors’ Course

In parallel with our orchestral courses, we offer a unique week of specialised study for school-aged conductors. The nature of the course is best suited to sixth formers but younger candidates will be considered and there have been year 10 pupils on the course.

Previous participants have come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences and have included musicians moving on to the conservatoires of the UK as well as those going on to read music at university.

The course director is Richard Dickins, who has considerable experience of teaching conducting. The aim is not only to provide direct conducting tuition and experience but to offer an insight into the mechanics of preparation and rehearsal, as well as the often unseen orchestral management issues.

The week will include

  • Technique lessons with video feedback, based on a selection of scores notified to participants before the course starts
  • Observation/participation in coaching sessions and sectional rehearsals
  • Opportunity to conduct NSSO Main Orchestra in rehearsals and repertoire sessions
  • Performing with the orchestras, as appropriate*
  • Working alongside the Orchestral Management on practical issues
  • Shadowing Heads of Sections with Q & A sessions
  • Writing an evaluation of the experience
  • Participation in the social and sporting activities
  • Full board and accommodation for the week and all transport between venues
