Extracts from Review published in the Blackmore Vale Magazine 24 July 2009

"THE National Schools Symphony Orchestra was at Millfield School in Street last week for the annual summer school leading up to a public concert for families and friends, and it was another triumph for conductor Mark Shanahan and course director David Evans."

"After a week of workshops, master-classes and rehearsals, the standard and cohesion achieved by these senior school student players was simply astonishing."

"The programme opened with Vaughan Williams' beautifully exposed The Lark Ascending, and the 13-year old violinist Hannah Bethan Roper joined the orchestra, mostly made up of players older than herself, as soloist."

Concert3

"five young French Horn players performing a specially adapted version of Robert Schumann's notoriously difficult Konzertstuck in F Major for Four Horns and Orchestra, played with considerable panache."

Concert

"The final piece brought the full forces of the orchestra, led by the poised and charismatic Isabel Lewin-Smith, to Modest Mussorgsky's ever popular Pictures at an Exhibition."

"Mark Shanahan's conducting was unhurried and sensitive, and everyone of the 78 players, including several from Millfield and Canford Schools, was totally involved in this exceptional, stirring and moving performance."
